Hey There !
Dave from McElhoes Family Farm/Belmont here.
Once
again, the weather dominates our life. As farmers, we are seldom
pleased with the weather as it is. The wet spring means many things are
either late or going to skipped this year. Now the heat is making
everything we do a bit uncomfortable. Nothing is probably as certain as
farmers complaining about weather.
Still
the sun is really helping the grass, which is really our stock in
trade, and the heat and the winds help hay to dry faster - which is good
because some of it is a little past prime.

In
other news, our little Farm Stand is (kind of) open. We are still
working on signs and display areas, and this year's offerings are still
kind of "to be determined" (see my commentary on the weather above).
We
have had a few sales, even though our offerings currently consist only
of garlic scapes and camp fire wood. By the way, only a few scapes are
left to cut, so if you happen to be interested...
The
warm weather also is letting us get our young birds out on pasture a
little early so they get even more sunshine and fresh grass, weeds and
bugs. Looking forward to better eggs and meat as a result.
I
mentioned in an earlier Newsletter that Betty, a dairy goat, had had a
surprise addition for us in the from of Bitsy, a beautiful little
doeling. Well, my dairying itch has been reactivated, and last week we
purchased a new doeling from an Amish friend, in the hope that we can
breed her and milk again next spring. Her name is Wilma, and she is
descendant from one of our best goats from years gone by. Exciting, but
it'll be a while.
Ok, gotta run. Making hay while the sun shines.
Thanks for listening,
Dave
