Hi !
Dave here,
I got an email on
Monday from a customer that purchased just one of our Gourmet Country
Chickens TWO YEARS AGO!
I
had never heard from her again, and although I wondered, I figured
perhaps we were simply not a good fit for her.
In her email she admitted that she had never cooked the bird she had
bought because it was kind of expensive, and she wanted to do
something special. Each time she saw it in her freezer, she would
research online for recipes, techniques and presentations she thought
might be “worthy of a special dinner.” In the process, she would
be overwhelmed with ideas and become kind of – her words-
“paralyzed” with indecision, and simply put it off.
Well, this past weekend, she had had holiday plans that were unexpectedly
canceled, and she needed to quickly improvise a holiday meal for her
family. With no ham or lamb, she saw the long neglected chicken, and
with no other choice, she simply seasoned it with salt, pepper,
lemon, garlic and rosemary as she always does with chickens she buys
at the supermarket and roasted it with a little extra attention to
basting.
Her
family apparently thought she had outdone herself, and were really
complimentary to her. Sunday dinner was a success, and she wrote to
me to tell me, and to see when we would have more in stock.
It kind of figures that this year we are having some difficulties in getting chicks in the time and in the quantities we are used to.
Our
expected harvests this year as follows:
Old
Fashioned Country Chickens: About August 8 and
September 26
Gourmet Country Chickens: About October 10
I
know these are late dates, and unfortunately supplies will be
limited. Of course, our Chicken Club members will always have first
dibs. I truly am sorry for the inconvenience, but it is out of our
control. We are looking to bringing more of these processes “on
farm,” but that won’t be this season.
At
any rate, I was really excited that she was happy with her purchase,
and also to hear she had overcome her apprehension over "wasting
a special chicken." I really do believe our chickens are special, and
I know they cost more than grocery store chicken, but they really are
a different product. By being careful with leftovers, perhaps making
stock or broth from the bones, you can narrow the cost gap, and I
believe the flavor and health benefits of our birds make them worth
it.
I
do not, however, recommend leaving any food in the freezer for as
long as that. Our shrinkwrap helps to avoid freezer burn, but... I
don't know about that long.
Anyway,
I am sorry about this becoming a sales letter. It was not my
original intent.
I
wanted to celebrate one woman's small triumph, and I'd like to celebrate yours too.
If you have a story, hit the button and tell me about it. I'll only share with your permission, but I love the feedback.
Thanks!
Dave
