Hey There !
Dave from McElhoes Family Farm/Belmont here.
I
know the Newsletter was MIA last week, but I was busy getting your
chickens ready and into the freezer, and in between regular chores, I
have finally gotten the inventory uploaded onto our website store.
It
has been a bit of a struggle. We had major supply problems last winter
when we were setting up for the year. Non-GMO feed supplies were
uncertain, and our preferred breeds of chickens were unavailable for the
times and dates we needed. Scrambling, we found different suppliers,
rescheduled and got moving. Our late start was kind of a blessing
though, since the spring was wet and cold and really not good for chicks
anyway. Once we were on the ground, however, we had heat and drought.
I can't say I never saw it this bad, but I don't remember it if we
did. We were short on grass, short on bugs, and carried more water than
we have ever had to. Then, despite additional time, additional feed,
additional work, weights were low, and we ran even later than we
expected.
Still, we had no health problems, few predators and no major calamities.
On
Sunday we had our first roasted chicken from this year. I went simple-
salt, pepper and butter, slow roasted, because I wanted to let the bird
stand on its own. The wait was worth it. The flavor was really good.
Better than I guess I expected from a simple preparation. I feel
confident these chickens will do justice to your favorite recipes. I
also feel good knowing they had the best chicken life I could provide,
the healthiest, Non-GMO feed and all the grass, bugs and sunshine nature
had for us this year.
If you are a Chicken Club Member, I have probably already sent you a separate email regarding your preferences and scheduling your delivery. If you didn't receive that, please hit me up and we will figure it out.
If you would like to purchase one of our chickens, the best way is to use the website store. Currently, my process is to meet you at our farm stand at your convenience. I have also delivered larger orders directly to some folks' door, and I am generally happy to meet you somewhere convenient to us both. When you order, the system is supposed to email me so I can email you to set up delivery. If you don't hear from me right away, PLEASE email me directly at dave@mcelhoesfarm.com, because I am still kinda figuring out the tech stuff, and it does not always work.
Hopefully more to report next week.
Thanks for Listening,
Dave
