How I really Feel about Homesteading

Why do I Love This Kind of Work?

It’s Wednesday Dave!

Katie just left for a friend’s house, Kelly is up in her office, and I’m sitting here thinking about everything that’s happened since I last emailed you. 7 days ago. It’s been a lot.

I could go into detail, but I promised Kelly I’d use this time to get my mess out of my office... err...the kitchen. So instead, I’ll just say the farm has really started to take off.

I’m getting calls, selling a few pre-orders here and there, and even made a little money last year, if you can believe that!

But the coolest thing about having homestead turned farm?

YOU!

I know it sounds corny, but it has seriously been so amazing getting to know so many people through this email list. Many of you have encouraged me to get on social media. I hope I can figure it out before the seasonal chaos begins.

Here are some things I love the most about living this homesteading come farming life:

1. I love that so many folks are seeking out plain good food and I love learning their individual reasons.

Seriously. I love reading the email replies you send me. Lots of folks started with a love of eating tasty things - I was a wannabe foodie in the 90's, and I see some folks just appreciate the quality and flavor that fresh from the farm food has. I'm not just talking my stuff. There are an increasing number of local folks making, growing for themselves, and selling their excess.

Then there other folks who are worried about their health or the health of their children either by avoiding certain things or seeking certain things, and a small farmer offers a better chance meeting their needs.

2. I also love that you read my ridiculous meanderings here, and getting occasional replies to these emails.

I haven’t met a single one of you that that I haven’t immediately clicked with and want to swap stories with.

3. People helping People.

Food really does build community. Other farmers have helped me to do many of the things we do. I love to share anything I know that might help you. Folks have offered me recipes they enjoy or advice on how we do things or how they do similar things. There have been gifts both given and received. I’ve gotten so much help from the community. It’s so awesome.

So again, thanks for being here, hitting reply and chatting with me. Thanks for buying a lamb or some broilers or eggs or whatever when you need it. Any and all of it.

It really helps me stay focused on what we are really doing here.

You’re the best.
