Hey,
Dave from McElhoes Family Farm/Belmont here. Again.
I had a little feedback about yesterday's email, and I need to clear a couple of things up.
First up, When I mentioned Herrick Kimball and his website PlanetWhizbang.com,
some folks thought I was plugging him or something. I do not get any
kind of compensation or other considering from that. I simply was
sharing stuff I find interesting and useful.
It's
funny about the internet. I started reading one of Herrick's blogs
many years ago, in about 2008 or 2009 perhaps, when I lived on a
mountain top in south central Pennsylvania. I followed a link one
evening to another blog (GrannyMiller, though I think she has since quit
blogging) by a woman kind of over towards Mercer County Pennsylvania.
At that time I had maybe been in that vicinity once or twice. A bit
later, I discovered another blog by her husband*, and exchanged a few
emails with him, over what I do not even recall.
I
had been looking for a new place to live, somewhere a little quieter,
where I might homestead or farm. He suggested the area where we now
live, St. Petersburg. At that time I was already traveling a ridiculous
distance to get raw milk for my kids, and St. Pete was actually closer
to the farm where we were getting it. Ok, long (and probably pointless)
story short. The farmer there was friends and neighbors with the
blogger, who happened to be friends with Herrick. I had come full
circle.
As regards Herrick's Mini-Bed System, it is deceptively
simple. He based it on work by Thomas Doyle back in the 1970s. It is
different than just using plastic mulch, and Herrick continues to
experiment and share his findings. I have tried it for the first time
this year, I am a fan, though I too continue to experiment for my own
uses.
So... I do apologize for any confusion. I simply was sharing a few tidbits I found interesting.
Thanks for listening,
Dave
*I
am withholding his name as he has since passed, and though he is
missed, I do not want to impinge on his widow's privacy. I do not know
if she is still blogging. Her old site was amazing, but I can no longer
find it.
